Management dashboards are an at-a-glance display of quantitative and qualitative information. They tell the top level story of performance, providing alerts if management efforts are veering off track as well as a decision path for action. Below are two examples of dashboards created with Excel. The dashboard on the left shows monthly revenue targets using gauges. The dashboard on the right focuses on the trend of key performance metrics each quarter.

Pivot tables are an effective way to sort through massive amounts of data. Below are a pivot table and chart that convey web analytics as a function of month, week, day, and hour. The chart to the left is set to look at the months of January and February on Monday at the hours 12 noon and 1 pm. The chart on the right shows the sum of all website visits in a month by hour over the course of most of a day.
